4 Places to Buy Wedding Invitation Envelopes on a Budget

You probably thought that printing your wedding invitations was going to be the hard part. But I’ve got some not-so-great news: finding inexpensive + high-quality envelopes is no walk in the park, either. There are so many textures, colors and styles to choose from, if you’re not a pro you might get lost in all the different choices. So, if you’re wondering where to buy invitation envelopes, this post is for you.  

I’ve tested just about every envelope on the block, and I’m here to break down my favorite envelope suppliers so you don’t have to do the leg work yourself.

Where to Buy Wedding Invitation Envelopes 

Regular Announcement Envelopes 

Where to buy: Cards and Pockets

These are your run-of-the-mill “A” envelopes, like A7, A6, etc. Usually when you’re buying wedding, announcement, baby shower or other event envelopes, these are what you’re looking for.  

A few things to know about announcement envelopes: 

•  They’re usually made from 80# text weight paper so they don’t add too much weight (ie. postage) to your stationery. But you can sometimes find them in the 90# range at select suppliers.  

•  They come in several standard sizes (A1, A2, A6, A7, A8, A9, A10) and a bunch of colors so you can customize them to match your event colors. 

•  You can choose between either a square flap or a Euro (pointed) flap. I’m a fan of the Euro flap because I think it gives invitations a more formal feel. Plus, there’s more room to print the return address on the back. But it’s a matter of personal preference! 

Laser Cut Envelopes

Laser cut announcement envelopes are a recent addition to the invitation scene. Made from sturdy, high-end paper, these envelopes are just like the envelopes mentioned above, except they have a design or pattern cut into the back flap. They’re then paired with a colorful envelope liner to accentuate the design and keep the envelopes intact in the mail.  

You can choose from either a pre-made design or make your own design to coordinate with elements from your wedding, such as your initials or a monogram. 

Not surprisingly, these are going to be pricier than regular announcement envelopes. 

Vellum Envelopes

Vellum envelopes are one of my favorite ways to upgrade wedding invitations because they’re romantic and unique.

Vellum is a soft, semi-translucent material that lets whatever is inside shine through. Personally, I like to pair vellum envelopes with a colorful invitation that stands on its own (one that has a design on the back, for instance) because it looks great peeking through the envelope. But you can be as simple or creative as you like with these. 

Make sure to pair them with a wraparound address label so the address is easy to read. 

Handmade Envelopes

One of life’s little luxuries, handmade wedding invitation envelopes can help upgrade just about any invitation suite.

Etsy is where I go for handmade envelopes on a small budget. Unlike some other handmade paper shops, you don’t have to wait around for months hoping a new batch will drop. You can be certain that what’s shown is in-stock and ready to shop. And if it’s not, it will be custom made just for you and shipped in a week or two.  

Inner and Outer Envelopes 

Where to buy: LCI Paper (but Cards and Pockets is a close second due to their huge color selection) 

“Inner” envelopes come ungummed (without glue) and are made specifically for inserting inside a larger “outer” envelope.

Using two envelopes not only ups the formality of your invitations, but it also helps protect your fancy invites from the elements or damage in the mail.  

Note that inner envelopes are traditionally A7 size, whereas outer envelopes are A7.5. But you can sometimes find them in other sizes. Cards and Pockets carries 6.5” square inner envelopes and 6.75” square outer envelopes, in addition to A7 and A7.5. 

Budget Envelopes

If you’re on a tight budget and you know exactly what kind of envelopes you’re looking for, Amazon has a somewhat limited selection of announcement envelopes that might fit the bill.  

I was hesitant to put this on the list because Amazon’s quality is always hit or miss, but every now and then I found some keepers.

And the price is usually amazing. 

The trick to getting the good stuff, is to be specific in your search. You need to know the size you need, the color and even the material or finish ahead of time. This will help cut down on the crappy envelopes that come back in search and ensure that you’re getting exactly what you want. 

You should also be willing to test out a few different options before buying in bulk. We’ve all had that experience where the item looked great on Amazon but the quality didn’t match up in real life. So, if the envelopes are cheap enough, buy a sample pack before blowing your stationery budget.
